One of the fun things about being a young photographer, relatively new to a well established industry, is that I feel like every photo shoot is an opportunity to improve and have my "best photo shoot ever." Of course, I hope that never changes, because I always want to be pushing the envelope of my abilities and vision to the point of whatever the newest technology allows.
Recently I had one of those "best photo shoot ever" experiences, when I met up with Levi and Amber for their Engagement Session. We found the most warm and colorful field of mustard flowers, on the most gorgeous spring day we've had in months. Combining those things with one of my favorite, fun, and beautiful couples, we had the recipe for success. I remember looking through the images later that night, and feeling as though I had stumbled upon a trove of beautiful treasures.
Unfortunately, I probably wont be sharing any images from their sure-to-be-beautiful summer wedding, but only because Levi invited me to be one of his groomsmen... he liked my photos that much! Actually, I've known Levi for the past six years, and he's one of my best friends.
Not to be too sentimental in a blog post, but I still remember the day I met Levi six years ago. I had just moved to Eureka after graduating from college, and I had taken a job as a youth pastor. That morning I was meeting a group of other youth workers for breakfast at the marina. One of the youth pastors, Cameron, had not yet come inside, because he was talking to Levi out by the docks. Levi had just found out earlier that morning that his father was lost at sea. Cameron, his friend and youth pastor, invited him in to have breakfast with all of us. I remember Levi didn't have much to say, and none of us yet knew about his father. When it was time for us to leave we went up to pay, but found that Levi had already paid for everyone's breakfast - all ten of us, even though we had only just met. I can't imagine what a difficult day that must have been for Levi, yet I'll always be struck by his gesture of love and generosity toward a bunch of guys he had only just met, and who didn't even know what he was going through.
As I've gotten to know Levi over the years - through countless youth events, snow trips, Mexico missions, our adventure to Europe last year, the forming of our boy band (thats a story for another time :-), shooting weddings together, and lots of hanging out - I've seen his heart for serving others time and time again. In fact, there are few people I know who so well demonstrate the act of putting others first, that I know Levi has helped define for me that aspect of what it means to really be someones friend.
So, you can see that this Engagement Session holds special significance beyond just being a great photo shoot. I am immeasurably happy for my friend and his amazing fiancée, Amber. I have seen how much they love being with one another, how perfectly their personalities mesh in all their playfulness and fun, and how much they both value loving God and others. I can't help but think what a great team they're going to make once they're married.
Anyway, there's much more I could say, but I think I'll save that for a toast at the wedding :-)
Congratulations Levi and Amber on your Engagement! I can't wait for the wedding!
